This is true. If UA furloughs any pilot on staff on the date the contract was signed, all 76-seat aircraft revert to 70-seat aircraft (but are still considered as 76-seaters for purposes of scope numbers). To trigger this clause, it is approximately 2300 pilots being furloughed. Current estimates are well beyond this number.
The new seatmap for these 70-seaters is now posted on UA.com. 6 seats are removed from the back (with no other changes, and no spacing out of the remaining rows). That type of change can probably be completed in a matter of hours. None of the 153 76-seaters have been converted as of today, but the change will likely begin very soon.
These aircraft can all be returned to 76 seats on the day that triggering pilot is recalled from furlough.
