I think you're being a little bit pedantic here. I'm not sure anyone is suggesting that WN is putting a physical barrier on the middle seats, but rather just telling people not to use them unless traveling together.
Speaking of the middle seats, interesting anecdote from a recent flight - there were only 34 people on board and two rows behind me there was a gentleman traveling alone who wanted to sit in the middle seat. Crew made him move to the aisle or window (he ended up choosing the window) and nobody else was in his row or within two rows of him. I found that rather curious.
