I've only used the Hilton phone key system and it's been hit or miss for me. I had a one night stopover last month and was just going to use the key on phone, until it took three minutes for my phone to open the outer building door. I went ahead and got a regular key card in from the front desk for that stay. Other places it's worked perfectly. Eventually it will get better and easier to use.
