Many programs have online shopping options that can be used to cheaply extend potentially expiring points/miles. My American miles were due to expire so I went on their shopping portal. I spent $3.76 at Snapfish to have a few digital photos printed and mailed to me. That tiny purchase was enough to earn a few miles and extend the expiration date.
Keep in mind that earning miles/points in this manner is not always quick. In some cases, it can take a few weeks before your purchases get credited. So, don't wait until the last minute if you're going to use this strategy.
