Passport is not obsolete, though as noted the stamp/documentation process is being revised in a growing number of countries.
Lack of passport stamps is a bummer if you ever have to fill out a background packet. They always want to know all countries visited with dates.
I have a tab on my mileage tracking spreadsheet to document international entries / exits in case I ever need to fill one out again, as flipping through passport pages is no longer accurate.
