During the height of the disastrous PPE equipment shortages in the US, the majority of flights from China were not carrying passengers, only freight. US airlines (like most other countries) themselves stopped flights to China. They were not forced to originally by the Chinese Government.

Subsequently as the virus came more under control in China and other Asian regions, China sensibly introduced their 5/1 policy. It was stated at the time that a review would be held on relaxing / opening up to 'western' carriers that had voluntarily stopped their original scheduled flights.

The rules have been applied fairly to all countries - not singling out the US - some of these points seem to be conveniently forgotten or overlooked by some.

I am sure that behind the scenes, China was allowed by the US administration to continue some flights in exchange for co-operation during the 'air bridge' operation supplying PPE to fill the gaps in the US shortages.
