A friend of mine who were from India were pissed when he found out Malindo does flight to india to pick up stranded Malaysian but was not allowed to board the flight enroute to India due to no approval given by Indian govt to accept their own citizen.
Those were chartered flights paid for by the Malaysian government to get their citizens out. This had to get the approval of the Indian government and protocols had to be agreed in advance. This was not a normal flight for passengers to book seats to travel.
Indian embassy could have arranged for rescue flights for its citizens if it wanted .
