The 2nd Ever Flyertalk Limerick Contest: TRIP REPORT TO THE BOTTOM OF MY CLOSET

MAY 1, 2020 UPDATE: The awards have been given!!! Thanks to everyone who participated!! Here is the video where the runners' up and the winners are announced. Unfortunately, I mistakenly gave authorship credit for the 3rd place winner. The correct 3rd place winner is LostInAmerica in spite of what we announced on the award show. Congrats to all the winners and participants .

THE ORIGINAL POST THAT STARTED IT ALL:
Greetings grounded Flyertalkers. This is a TRIP REPORT to a rarely traveled destination, the BOTTOM OF MY CLOSET! During these Coronavirus times, many of us miss our usual travel and have been forced to remain at home. The result is many closets and drawers are getting cleaned out with all our spare time. Some of the gems that I found deep in my closet were some unopened, brand-new, airline pajamas. So I decided I need to find them good homes.

I am giving away three pajamas from the world’s top airlines to the top Flyertalk limerick authors:
  • 1st Place: Singapore Airlines First Class Lalique Pajamas
  • 2nd Place: Lufthansa Airlines First Class van Laack Pajamas
  • 3rd Place: Qatar Airlines The White Company Business Class Pajamas

Over 17 years ago, I held the 1st ever limerick contest here on Flyertalk to give away four American Airlines VIPOWs, upgrade certificates that could be used internationally. Here’s the thread but in the olden days, the thread suffered some platform technical difficulties and not all the responses can be seen. But the submissions give you an idea of what I’m looking for.

Limericks are intended to be funny, silly, and often saucy (trending to obscene.) I prefer limericks that adhere to the basic AABBA rhyming scheme and the traditional syllable scheme. Check out this link to help you understand limerick construction. https://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Limerick=

With all that said, I welcome you to give this a try. If you have never written a limerick, it can be great fun. Writing a limerick helps pass the time. Like its Japanese cousin, the Haiku, it is a concise expression of a moment in life.

My husband is also an aficionado of the limerick. So I told him about my idea to award pajamas for limericks and asked him to write a demonstration limerick to inspire you all. Here is his limerick. Always read the limerick out loud to get the full affect.

HUBBY LIMERICK #1:
My passport is gathering dust
Thought of hot towels give me lust
I miss crying twins
And overhead bins
Yet shelter in place, I must.

.
HUBBY LIMERICK #2:
I’m not on a plane; I’m complying.
Yet Emirates ads start my crying.
I long for the treat
Of a flat, reclined seat.
But “frequent” is NOT how I’m flying.

.
Topics that you might want to include in your limerick include corona virus, staying at home, isolation, no sex, no lounge hopping, no Dom, no Krug, no caviar,...

Here is my sample limerick I just wrote this morning in the shower.

OLAFMAN’S LIMERICK:
(Read this using a NY accent like Mike Myers’s character Linda Richmond from SNL’s Coffee Talk)
There once was a bug named Corona
It made me stay home alone-a
No first class, no Dom
Just Pornhub.com
I rather be surfing on Kona.
.
My goal with all of this is to put a smile on all of our faces during a moment in our lives when we really need to smile and laugh more.

Travel is so important in my life. Flyertalk has helped me enjoy travel even more. Twenty years ago, Flyetalk taught me how to get almost 3,000,000 AA miles buying Nutrigrain bars and ValueMag magazines. Ten years ago, Flyertalk helped my family and I plan the biggest adventure of our lives: Fifth Grade Around The World. We learned so much during that year of travel with our son who was then ten years old.

Soon we will be traveling again, experiencing new adventures and making new friends. Until that moment, let’s put on our creativity hats and have a laugh about our crazy, sometimes, scary, and wonderful world.

-Carl (Olafman)

NOTE:
All submissions must be added to this thread by April 30, 2020. Only one entry per person. Void where prohibited by law. Prizes will be shipped by slow boat once it is safe to go to the Post Office or my office opens again.
