A bit late, but I had to deal with this recently:
Rented Fullsize with PC, got a Premium from PC lot. Halfway through the trip the check engine light came on. Called Hertz PC number, the number of the Hertz location I rented from, and the number of the Hertz location I was closest to (RIC) and asked all three if I could swap cars at the RIC location. All three confirmed yes, I could, but the class that I was driving was the class that they would give me as a swap, and I would not be able to use the PC lot.

I think that's kind the protocol now. I swapped an intermediate at EWR and was told the same thing, but you can try to get a specific model if they have it
