When I look up that connection on the website, it does not show that connection 1732/971 at all. You can book the LAS-PHX flight separately and the PHX-SFO, but the connection is not showing up on the schedule.. Does that mean that one or both may not be operating on that day? I'm going to wait to cancel it since I'm assuming that I can get a refund rather than travel funds if there is a cancellation?
my flights on SWA yesterday went fine even though (the day prior) you could not book the flight connection I was on, only the single flights. So based on this single example, your friend may be OK
