Correct; however, you would need to split the PNR to do it. When it’s time to rebook, if you say that you only want to rebook one passenger and leave the credit in the ticket for the other, the agent will split the PNR. I do not think that it is possible to add any new travelers to a PNR when making a change like this, so if you were originally traveling with your son, and now you wanted to travel with your wife using that credit, while your son took a separate trip, I think your wife would end up on a separate PNR also. (I may be wrong about this).
