I was a GS for several years based out of BOS MHT from UA perspective and I got A LOT of upgrades and benefits out of it for my wife and family. But I was flying a lot of front cabin. To have someone daisy chained and getting those benefits seems wrong.

While you aren’t doing anything nefarious, this I believe is a loop hole needing closed.

Can only imagine how many times your friend has cleared an upgrade over someone because of this....
