Depending on stage length OP was typically flying with DL, the flights may have not had meals at all. DL threshold for meals in FC is 900 miles (with a few exceptions on certain business routes). AA's threshold looks to be 700 miles. Domestic FC meals are probably not a DL strong point. But then, their FC cabins tend to be somewhat larger than AA's. DL has 12/16/20 FC seats on A319/A320/A321 while AA is 8/12/16. You see similar differences in other fleets.
