I just had a chance to clarify the overnight check-through luggage policy with an ANA airport agent. It is allowed if:
1. The whole ticket is issued by ANA (won't work for UA-issued tickets. Didn't ask for AC)
2. The flight coming into Tokyo is international
and the flight leaving Tokyo is also international (can't have Japan domestic)
3. Maximum duration can span
three calendar days (eg. incoming flight arrives Jan. 1, outgoing flight departs Jan. 3)
4. Works at both NRT and HND
5. Might work even for codeshares (agent wasn't sure about this, but I
think once upon a time I bought an ANA ticket that included a UA codeshare, and the UA check-in agent was able to through-check my bags to my destination despite an overnight layover in Tokyo)
Item 3 is pretty sweet! Means that if I'm flying from A to Tokyo to B, and my itinerary stops in Tokyo for two nights, I can still choose to have my luggage sent to B if desired, saving the trouble of picking them up in Tokyo. As long as I buy my whole ticket from ANA. The agent said that if on UA stock, the maximum is only 12 hours.
