I keep an open pocket in my backpack that I use to empty my pockets before going through security. Wallet, keys, coins, cell phone(s), smartwatch, whatever is in my pockets or on my person goes into that pocket. I waltz through security, and then empty the backpack pocket and put the items back into their places later.
I like to do it this way rather than putting the stuff from my pockets into a tray. After passing through security, I grab my bag (and shoes if applicable) and go. I don't need to spend time at security emptying the tray directly into my pockets.
