May - especially earlier in May, before Memorial Day weekend - is a great time to visit New England because the weather is starting to get nice and there isn't a lot of traffic outside of Boston itself. If you're going to be in Maine May 22-25, you might run into some crowds in certain places, but earlier than that you'll be fine.
Keep in mind that for many coastal areas of Maine, a lot of shops and restaurants are seasonal (summer only) and may not be open for business yet when you are there. So if there is something that is specifically on your itinerary to see/do, make sure it will be open during your travel dates.
I don't have any knowledge of # 2 or 4, so hopefully someone can chime in on those.
