If your trip starts with a VA operated flight, the DL app has nothing to do with checking in. Your trip is wholly handled by VA. You can download the VA app if you want, but it's not really any different than the VA website. Get your VA PNR from Delta so you can do OLCI with VA.
I am pretty sure you'll be able to do OLCI with VA (entering your passport details) and get a 'BP-like' printout that says you need to show ID at check-in. Then you can get docs checked at the Emirates lounge in TBIT, or at the gate.
