You'll have a great time and your wife will feel pretty silly about the "travel ban" once you've arrived.
If you feel safe at your average American mall parking lot alone at night, then your fine in Playa in the main tourist areas.... Random (meaning you didn't do something to provoke it in some way) violence against tourists in Mexico is EXCEEDINGLY rare - don't believe the for-profit media which sells ads by scaring the sh*t out of you.
