An alternative to the Inca trail is to do a bike tour: first day gliding down the mountain, descending from frigid, damp 4,500m pass, to a warm and lush jungle climate. Followed by a day's hike, a lazy evening in the hot springs, followed by an alternative train to Aguas Calientes, the next day at Machu Picchu, then the train back to Cusco.
