I just cancelled the minute after I created a points reservation, and then I live chatted and the rep says I have two years from my last activity, which she confirmed was today. I casually mentioned that I wasn't sure if my cancelled reservation counted, and she says "yes, it does." So there you have it. They're not afraid to admit that cancelled reservations reset the clock!
