Korean Air is a very "old school traditional" airline in may ways when it comes to things like standby, "cash upgrades at the gate" (which don't exist). Personally, I don't have any experience with this - I would just call the service center and ask. I feel like the gate agents are very restricted in things they can do like "free, simple standby on the spot" - does that make sense?
