I bounce between silver and GM on United every few years.
Go free-agent and buy benefits a la carte as you want/need them. I have the Explorer card for BG2 and I buy E+/F when the price is right. Pre is a more useful than priority lines at security anyways.
Loyalty is pointless for flyers in this tier.
