To be clear, the 4-hour rule only applies at the seven airports very clearly listed on the AA website. At those counters, the system locks the kiosks and agents. Elsewhere, it is same day and you may check your bag as soon as the counter opens for the day.
OP may be shocked, but LAS has been on this list for as long as I can remember.
