Popularity has nothing to do with Japanese routes
For Japanese this type of meal is quite common so it may well work on Japanese routes better than other routes.. On Domestic flights they are sold airside shops(like at the rail stations but normally less choices at the airport normally, CTS seems the outlier with lots of takeaway options) and people eat them on the airplane and ANA/JAL offers this on longer flights (not free) such as HND-OKA.
