Instead of purposely seeking out specific cafes (which more likely than not will serve Espresso-based drinks instead of the local sock coffee) ... if you'll be near / in a mall, seeking out one of the local coffee shop chains* and getting a set of kaya (sweet egg custard) butter toast, soft boiled eggs (locals eat it with white pepper and dark soy sauce, but I personally prefer the salty light soy sauce), and coffee (i always order less sweet otherwise it is overwhelmingly so) is probably the way to go.

* My go-to favourite is Ya Kun Kaya Toast, but Heavenly Wang, Killiney Kopitiam are good too ... try to avoid Toast Box if possible though cos the toast there sucks big time.
