Without the specifics, this is all shooting in the dark. But,

1. Does AA have an interline ticketing agreement with the other carrier? If not, then forget it.
2. Even if AA is willing to rebook in F, will the other carrier accept the Y "coupon" as payment? Not likely.

VDB is a reverse auction. If the offer is a $400 voucher and rebooking on the inconvenient flight or some other AA flight, and someone else accepts that, you do not even get to make your case. It is also a lot easier to pay $500 or more to get a volunteer rather than spending a lot of time engaging in what is a complex transaction at the gate.

All of this presupposes that an overbooked flight really is oversold at the gate.

Bottom line is that I would plan on this not happening and also be ready to pounce if there is an offer and the dollars and reroute work.
