The last time my bags were successfully checked all the way through was quite a long time ago, so I don't remember exactly. But there were a couple times that I ticketed my trip on NH stock instead of UA. It's possible those two success cases were those times. I'll test this idea next time. If it bears out, then the blame might be on UA's computer system while dealing with UA stock.
