Since booking is done > 1 year of the return date, this is outside of the booking systems capability - therefore for me it is outside the control of both parties, so an exception should be made in charging a rebooking fees (an increase in air fare is OK reasonable if the same booking class is not available).
Cheers!
every kind of booking (airlines / hotels / rent car) exist in free modifiable rate or not modifiable rate or modifiable rate with fee.
it’s not mandatory to book a non modifiable rate or a modifiable rate with fee if you already know you have to change it ...
of course if you book a modifiable rate with fee, then you have to pay it.
what is the point ?
if you would like to change the return day without to pay any fee, simply book a rate that allows you to do it without fee
