Your question set me off on a tangent thinking about the Great Western Railway, which expanded into steamships to give people a reason to travel its line to Bristol and on to the New World. And also provided the Chief Engineer Isambard Kingdon Brunel another outlet for his talents. This led me to read about the CP and steamships but I failed to pursue it on to the obvious airline!
