But is it instead possible to earn Air NZ airpoint dollars for the Auckland <> Hong Kong legs? Even though ticket is booked via Cathay, and has a CX number. CX198 AKL > HKG, and CX 113 HKG > AKL
If so, then I'll go and add all 4 family members Air NZ numbers to the booking, so we can all earn APD, rather than asia miles.

Airpoints members can earn Airpoints Dollars when travelling on flights booked with an NZ or CX flight number between New Zealand and Hong Kong only. Airpoints Dollars are not able to be earned on flights booked with a flight number that does not begin with NZ or CX.
Flights booked with an NZ flight number, even if they are operated by Cathay Pacific will earn Airpoints Dollars as per the Air New Zealand tab on our Airpoints Calculator.
Flights booked with a CX flight number (e.g. CX107) will earn Airpoints Dollars as per the Partner tab on our Airpoints Calculator.
Airpoints for Business members can earn Airpoints Dollars on Cathay Pacific operated flights with an NZ flight number between New Zealand and Hong Kong, subject to flying in an eligible booking class.
Be careful about having 2 ffp's in the reservation. Can be hard to manage and make it stick. Carefuly check for each flight.
Finnair AY manage my booking works with many OW airlines, but not sure about with CX
Worth considering other OW ffp's
Asiamiles is not the most generous of ffp's. Some low cost fares/fare booking class buckets earn little to nil with AS or other OW ffp's. CX ff miles have a hard 3 year expiry
QF allows ff points can be moved to eligible family members at no cost. One of better features of the QF ffp (does not have many good features). QF ff points do not expire if eligible activity in 18 months.
AA & BA ffp's are others to consider
