This has happened to me as well. Infuriating, especially when a paid-for preferred seat is no longer a preferred seat and you have to fight even to get a refund.
In any event, it is important to keep in mind that when AC says something is "confirmed" they do not use the word in the normal dictionary sense. In the AC dictionary it means "confirmed unless we decide to unconfirm it". In other words, you can never, ever trust anything AC tells you.
