Many thanks for the response. Unfortunately this is the first trip on a new ESTA (and a new passport for my partner), so presumably we have to join the normal queue and can't use the machines?

I believe first time ESTA means first time ever using ESTA. Going for the first time on a new ESTA (after having already used ESTA before), you won’t have to stand in the regular line and can use the APC kiosks.
