1. I don't think the BAEC numbers are premium numbers. You just need to call the BAEC service number which is usually shown on the back of your BAEC card or on your BAEC page. You can call Japan or the US when seats are released in the middle of the night. hopefully someone can post their numbers
2. If booking a trip to Japan or HKG then what you outlined is the best way to do it. If you call BA to book the inbound rather than booking it separately online then you won't get the saving in taxes/fees/charges.
3. I think it should be fairly straightforward, no special language needed.
4. Yes book as a return if going to the US, do not book the inbound separately online. If you want to reduce further your only options are starting in INV or JER to avoid the APD (about £160 per person)
