It is something to think about for sure. Here is my upcoming case. I booked a trip from IAD to JNB this December using my United miles. If SAA folds more than likely United will put us on another Star Alliance flight....Turkish, United, Lufthansa for example. I also have a flight reserved with Delta....DTW to JNB. I am a Platinum Medallion with Delta so I can cancel my booking at least 72 hours in advance with no issues. If December rolls around and SAA is still flying I will not have any issues flying them to JNB, The safety of thew planes do not concern me.

So basically I have a contingency plan with SAA...that makes me comfortable given their current situation. I do understand that not everyone can have such a plan.
