Costco is a great source. Will show you on a grid major rental companies and there prices for each category of car. Easy to see the cheapest acceptable car. Booking through them gives you a free second driver. Reservations are cancellable.
As noted by many others car rental prices bounce around. After making a reservation I check periodically to see if costco has a better deal.
