HAN-HKG was in J. If I search ITA Matrix for the earlier flight with Hanoi as the Sales City, I see that 2J is clearly available.

Called CX to make the change. They say the flight is "all sold out" for the purposes of changing an existing ticket, even though there's space available when making a new booking.

Can someone explain to me the tricks that CX are pulling here? I tried to listen to the CX agents' explanations (multiple of them!) but I never fully understood before they ran out of patience.
Maybe the flight is actually sold out in business class? J2 doesn't necessarily mean that the number of available tickets is capacity minus 2. It means they are willing to sell 2 seats. So they might be willing to oversell by two, but since it's at capacity, they aren't willing to change a ticket to that flight.

Just a guess.
