We booked a house at a local beach for Fourth of July weekend a few months ago. When we booked we were right at the "max" occupancy of 12 (8 adults, 2 children and 2 babies). Recently, another couple had a change in plans and are planning on joining us that weekend. That will make our total 16 (10 adults, 2 children and 4 toddlers under the age of 2).
Should I be worried that we are now over the occupancy of the house? Any suggestions if you think this is a problem?

YES that is absolutely a problem, and can get you in some hot water not just with the host (who would be allowed to bill you extra) but with Airbnb as well.
Always contact the host first. Transparency is the name of the game.
