there are a couple of posts on the value of GC vs 5K points... but I still don‘t get why someone would pick the GC.

I see it this way: 100$ GC means no WOH points to earn, whereas 5k points means I would have had to spend 1k$ to earn them. In my view picking the 5k points is a no-brainer.

I'm flush with points due to business stays. Got an upcoming points redemption at the Andaz Costa Rica and the GC lets me pay for incidentals and meals (while earning points on that spending). The GC was a no brainer for me.
