Why is that surprising? There are 274 Y seats on a UA 781, so that means about 8% of the pax were Plat/1K/GS, had a friend with a certificate, or applied their miles for an upgrade (and were higher status than you). Certainly
any elite with an RPU handy is probably going to apply it to EWR-SFO.
