Lots of people do it. Not everybody is successful... Anybody who says categorically that it definitely can be done isn't giving you good advice.
Some hotels require that the member be physically there for any elite benefits. I've also seen reports of people denied check-in because the member isn't there. As long as all are aware of the risks then go ahead...
