I've been using a Pogoplug as a VPN gateway for years. I have two of them, both of which were purchased to be used as small Linux boxes (ie, I never actually used them as a Pogoplug). One cost $4.99 about 4.5 years ago, and the second ended up being free about 3 years ago (cost $5.99, but was refunded by the seller after a shipping issue).

They aren't the fastest thing out there, but for the price they do a great job.
