I tend to take a harder look at it because fundamentally all my hotel costs come out of my own wallet rather than a huge corporate purse.

If the properties at which you are a frequent guest treat you so well (and that has not been my own personal experience) then RA also means nothing because the property would treat you well regardless right? It is hardly a ringing endorsement of the RA programme is it, more "look at me I am ok!".
