No, this wasn't the waitlist clearing - your eTicket for that segment would still have been in K class. The ticket would have required a reissue following that segment being confirmed in I class in your reservation before you'd be eligible for travel in the I class cabin (without an OpUp, which is likely what happened).
If you look at your BAEC statement for that leg I'd imagine you got K class Tier Points and miles.
That makes sense - the Avios/Tier Points awarded were indeed still for K class. Just to confirm though when the TA booked the ticket they told me that "The European sectors get upgraded if there is I class space available, there isn't at the moment but I can wait list. " - so at least it was possible to do that (in the case that I space became available sufficiently early to be re-ticketed). Good luck in any case with your planned travel!
