IIRC the Plaza (NYC) was sold to someone in Saudi Arabia more than a decade ago. I'm not sure whether some units were converted to condominium apartments at the same time.

I'm not sure which came first, but the hotel was apparently having a tough time post 9/11 and decided to sell rooms very cheaply to tour groups, and in particular for very cheap trips. It changed the atmosphere as, for example, many of these tour group rooms were occupied by three or four adults.
