Many have speculated that this is pre-emptive given JetBlue's event next week when they're expected to announce London service, likely from BOS and JFK (which London airport is not known yet but Delta would seem to be gambling on LGW).

LGW has its pros and cons and various players have tried to make JFK-LGW a thing over the years, including DL for a while before US-EU Open Skies, and occasionally BA and AA have offered it. You could argue that LGW is an okay arrival point for certain London destinations, though for DL/VS premium passengers these days, missing out on the Virgin Clubhouse at LHR is a big loss. (There is a Clubhouse at LGW which I haven't tried; it looks okay but it's still not the LHR one.) Plus, no Revivals lounge at LGW.
