For what it is just worth I just stayed at Aloft Sukhumvit soi 11 last month and had a great stay. The staff were very accommodating and I really liked the decor as well as the liveliness of soi 11. That being said I can understand it is not everyone's scene.
Definitely check out Daniel Thaiger and above 11 rooftop bar just up the street.
