While one would assume an item as big as a laptop would be found after deplaning, the airplane turned around back to YYZ so it may have been stowed on the plane or turned during boarding or after pushback.
Since it was a recent purchase, you should also find out if you have any theft / loss protection from your credit card issuer. They may require you to file a police report at a local police department during your trip to FLL.
