Thanks for the data point, but I think I mis-explained myself.
Let me try another way:
At the Hyatt Andaz, there was only one single award for my nights. So i booked it, and it disappeared, leaving no awards for my nights.
Now I need to book it a different way.
If I cancel the award night I have, I understand the points I used will go back to my account pretty quickly.
But my main question is: Will the award night be available for rebooking right away? Or at any time?

Ah I see...
that may be tricky... out of my experience previously working for the airline industry, canceling a flight segment does not automatically mean the inventory will be open again. same could apply here for the award room.
you may better call CS for this issue.
