These fares are still around, i just helped some family members on the east coast get to South Africa for just a couple hundred more than their friends traveling in economy plus during peak travel periods next winter.

LATAM had held back Z space for peak christmas 2019 dates, at least the outbound, so they had to settle for the I fare on thr outbound. Wound up ticketing thru AMEX, no IAP discount on this one though, but they had a pile of MRs to bring the price down quite a bit and get the 35% rebate with the biz platinum card. It was $2700ish per ticket total, routed through JFK on the return and via SCL and GRU for the flatbeds all the way. Was able to OJ into CPT and out of JNB as well. Overall a good value.

Wondering if AS has updated flight ranges for LA coded segments, at 200% rdms that would be the place to bank these, three free domestic US one ways with the 35k AS miles if the over water LA segmente credit properly. If not BA could be decent w a household account to pool roughly 20k rdms x 5 pax and use for shorthaul AA and AS redemptions.
