A 777 styled as AA 142 flew from JFK to LHR on Friday. The return flight AA 141 was cancelled. This morning the same aircraft is flying non-stop from LHR to TUL, presumably for maintenance as AA9653. I'm curious as to why they would cancel a revenue flight and instead fly empty to maintenance from such a long distance. It would seem there must have been a significant reason not to haul passengers but rather go straight to maintenance.

There is a number of conditions that would allow an aircraft to be ferried but barred from carrying revenue passengers. The mechanical issue apparently was deemed more easily addressed at TUL than in the UK or the Continent - and not of the nature requiring it be sent to HAECO in Hong Kong. Engine or other major component replacement? We won’t likely ever know.
